Mike- about pine nuts- Try putting them in skillet over med or med low heat (hotter is faster put you have to watch- burning is quicker), stirring until browned w/ nutty aroma. I think they're great when toasted like this, especially added to rice.

Hate to break your neg calorie myth but if the food consumed contains less energy than it does to bring that food to body temp, then you have a neg calorie food. Study thermodynamics.

I was neighbors with Nicole when she lived in Georgia. Unfortunately my husband's good Mexican cooking has been the demise of several of us, myself included. I am so impressed with what Nicole has been able to accomplish. She has given me hope that I can accomplish healthy results as well.

I am going to get your book and start learning a healthier path to a longer life - I am really tired of being overweight.

Thanks, Romy! I've contacted my insurance company to determine what's covered and what isn't and as soon as I know, I'll be in to see the PCP.

Thank you for all your help- you have really helped me make major changes in my life. Since April, I have lost almost 20 pounds and have made serious adjutments to my eating and exercise habits. I've ramped up even more over the past month and expect to lose even more weight before the end of the year.

Thank you for all you do!

Alison,

Great job on reducing your caffeine dependency and taking the initiative to see your PCP.

Everyone is different, and your PCP will know what to run if he/she hasn't seen you in a while. Make sure to let your doctor know if you are having any symptoms, that helps them know which tests to order. Have him/her run the following, but make sure your insurance will cover them first, as some insurance companies may not cover all of the following:

CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel)
CBC (complete blood count)
Cholesterol or Lipid Profile (which should include total cholesterol, as well as the breakdown for LDL and HDL and VLDL and Triglycerides, etc.)
Serum OH D (Vitamin D)
TSH (a comprehensive thyroid panel is even better; one that includes free T4, Free 73 and TPO, as well as the standard TSH)
Depending on age and/or symptoms you may be having, some doctors know to run a hormone tests for: testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, pregnenolone and DHEA as well.
If risk for heart disease: C-reactive protein and homosystine as well.

Thank you, Romy, for taking my call and answering. I feel much better about days I want to eat more (1900 calories) and days I want less (1300 calories). I had felt like I wasn't doing it correctly because so many sources said I needed a deficit of 1000 calories per day, but for me, I cannot maintain on only 1300 calories per day indefinitely (until I reach my best weight). FYI, I didn't give a goal weight because I'm not sure what is best for me, either. Still, I know at least 50 lbs has to go, so that's where my focus is for now.
Thanks again!
-Mel.

This episode reminded me that I need to get in to see my PCP for my annual physical and gets some bloodwork done.

I'm 31 years old and I haven't had any blood work done since roughly 2006. what kinds of things should I have them look for and what numbers should I have them check?

I know in previous shows you had talked about vitamin D levels to determine what kind of supplement I should take but I wondered what other items should I request.

Great show, Romy and Mike!

And I wanted to thank you so much for you help with my caffeine issue. I am much better but I've also started taking the licorice root supplement. Hopefully I'm on the road to recovery. So, thanks!

Michael, thanks for that tip about sitting up in your car. I have a 90 minute to 3 hour commute everyday, and besides listening to podcasts, it's handy to have something useful to do (that doesn't make my driving more of a hazard to myself and others ;))

And thanks to the both of you for answering my voice mail. I never realized how much I sound like an effeminate Kermit the frog

Couldn't agree more about the Zing bars. I have to order them online as they are not stocked in any stores in my part of the country. I love the Blueberry Almond also and yes, I too feel full after I eat them. Yea! Romy, thanks for telling us about these.

Since starting my weight loss adventure, I have used only Cliff C and Lara Bars. While these are "clean", they never filled me up or made me feel satisfied. I was reluctant to try the Zing Bars because they are more expensive and I had to wait on shipping etc. Let me tell you, these are fabulous. They are worth the price. I LOVE the Blueberry Almond and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip. I feel full after eating these without feeling bloated. They are so tasty. Thanks so much for the podcast and the wonderful suggestions.

Ooh, good point. I just figured you were occasionally in the same studio because your voice is so clear and un-tin-can-like. Please don't ruin my illusions further by saying it's all scripted, you do your lines separately, and then it all gets edited together later :) Or worse, you could reveal that Romy is actually just cleverly edited-together voice samples from a particularly perky GPS unit.

Sorry, it's true, I am the only person that laughs at my jokes.

Please don’t ruin my illusions further by saying it’s all scripted, you do your lines separately, and then it all gets edited together later Or worse, you could reveal that Romy is actually just cleverly edited-together voice samples from a particularly perky GPS unit.

Michael said he lacked a sparring partner, yet a couple episodes ago I seem to remember Summer saying she used to compete in full-contact Karate. Surely you guys can get together at some point with all the podcasts I hear your voices on ;)

Hi Romy,

I've just finished listening to all your podcasts over the week and you've inspired me to be more serious about my health.

Both my husband and I are using our treadmill more often and I've started using FitClick to track my food intake and my exercise. It makes a huge difference for me because I am committed to being honest in my food log and I do not want to write that I ate something really unhealthy in a non-cheat meal, so I won't eat it.

Keep up the good work and I hope there will be more podcasts soon!

Romy,

I started listening to the podcast from the beginning during my commute home last night. I'm currently in the middle of listening to Episode #2 and have found myself already consciously making different choices about what I eat and when. I've had two opportunities today that would have normally had me drinking soda (diet soda, but still) and instead I held off until I got back to my desk and stuck with the big jug of water that I refill each morning. It looks like soon I'll be moving to even more water as I try to change some of these habits.

Thanks for this show it's already starting to kick-start my motivation to get back to heathier eating and weight loss, and It might even be something that brings Tony's Losing It back to the podosphere.

Thanks!

Hi Romy,

Just wanted to drop a line and let you know I'm loving the show. I started listening last week after hearing the ads on Slice of Sci-Fi, and I've already listened to all but the most recent episode. I discovered the show shortly after starting a new workout plan and clean eating regimen after putting on a lot of weight over the last year, and it's been a real inspiration. I'm even cutting out gluten for (at least) a couple of weeks!

Everyone is different, but for those who have trouble gaining mass, often 6-7 meals per day is best. The difference for someone losing weight, their calories must be tightly controlled. For those looking to gain weight, your calories need to be higher per meal. Check out eatright.org to find a nutrition professional near you who can work with you to figure out your calories per meal necessary to reach your goal weight.

Hiya Romy, very well written! Please remember than Sun cream doesn't block the UV-A which penetrates deep down inside the skin. This can still cause skin cancer.
